“When she was found, staff began lifesaving procedures and she was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced,” prison officials said. “Ms. Smith was receiving professional mental health support through a specialist suicide prevention program.

This is the third inmate death at a Cobb County jail in two weeks. Joshua Capes, 47, died after being found unconscious in his jail cell on May 3. Deputies were able to revive Capes and he was rushed to hospital, but later died. His cause of death has not been revealed.

Inmate Eva Kanja, 28, died while undergoing a mental health assessment on May 12. The cause of his death has not been revealed.

The Cobb Sheriff’s Office is the first in the state to offer 24-hour mental health care to inmates, according to a news release.

“Unfortunately, our detention center – and thousands of detention centers across the country – have become de facto mental health hospitals,” Sheriff Owens said. “I will be convening local leaders, including those who have just visited the facility, to help identify solutions and hopefully find treatment options outside of incarceration.”

The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office said it will soon be rolling out new technology that tracks inmates’ vital signs and allows staff to monitor their health in real time.

Earlier this week, a WSB-TV news crew and members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference got a glimpse of prison conditions. Cobb officials said they wanted to be transparent and show that conditions in the prison are not inhumane, as claimed by Young Thug’s lawyers.

The rapper is currently in custody after being arrested on gang charges earlier this month.
