Microsoft customers considering redeeming Microsoft Reward Points should not do so at this time, as redeeming points may result in the associated Microsoft account being banned.
Microsoft Rewards gives customers the opportunity to earn points, which can then be redeemed for gift cards, sweepstakes entries, and other rewards. Points are earned when customers use certain Microsoft products, including Bing Search, Microsoft games, or the Microsoft Store.
A search on Bing earns customers 5 reward points, provided they are signed in with their Microsoft account. Using Microsoft Edge, the company’s web browser, further improves the points gain. Points can also be earned when searching from the Windows operating system search box.
Microsoft customers get 1 point for every $1 spent on the Microsoft Store and can also earn points by playing select Microsoft games.
Additionally, there may be tasks that customers can complete to earn extra points. You can get 30 points for setting up a PIN in Windows, or for loading specific web pages or search pages recommended by Microsoft.
The accumulated points can be spent in different ways. Microsoft customers can donate points to certain nonprofit organizations. Other options include purchasing gift cards with points, for example a Microsoft gift card starts at $5 for 5000 points, but other gift cards are available.
Issues with point redemptions and account banning
A thread on Reddit suggests that Microsoft customers can be banned if they currently redeem points. The issue has been confirmed by Microsoft employee Daniel Martins, who is the Xbox Loyalty Marketing Manager.
Dear Microsoft Rewards members,
We are aware that some members are affected by a technical issue where some accounts are wrongly suspended when attempting to redeem.
Our team is actively working to resolve it, we appreciate your patience.
?If you believe your account was suspended in error, please file a support ticket at https://support.microsoft.com/supportrequestform/cf50b787-a987-a7ff-133c-6c4e3f638013
Microsoft customers who have been banned after redeeming points are urged to register a support ticket for the account to be unlocked. Microsoft has not fixed the issue at the time of writing. Keep an eye on the Reddit thread, as the patch announcement will likely be posted there.
