Microsoft Flight Simulator free update brings stunning detail to Italy

Microsoft Flight Simulator’s latest free update features highly detailed renderings of Italy and its surrounding regions.

Microsoft Flight Simulator just released a major new update focusing on Italy and surrounding areas. Drivers in Microsoft Flight Simulator can now enjoy the beautifully rendered landscapes and cities as they fly above the skies of Italy in Global Update 9.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is not only one of the oldest and most well-known flight simulators in its genre, but it is also one of the longest running franchises in gaming history. Microsoft Flight Simulator 1.0 was released in 1982 for the IBM PC and has been continuously updated for each generation of games. Its latest iteration is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, a superbly detailed and immersive flight simulation featuring dozens of realistic aircraft ranging from the aerobatic biplane Aviat Pitts Special to the juggernaut Boeing 747-8. The game features accurate renderings of airports, cities, and landscapes around the world and is regularly updated to bring new locations with improved detail.

The latest global update for Microsoft Flight Simulator was released today, titled World Update 9: Italy. The update aims to bring Italy to life with impressive detail throughout the region. The latest geospatial data from digital elevation modeling and aerial and satellite imagery has been used to shape the terrain as accurately as possible. Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) modeling of 20 cities, including Rome, Naples, Venice, and Milan, has brought incredible detail to the cities, to the point that Italian players can be able to say “I can see my house from here !” Four Italian airports were handcrafted by Gaya Simulations, including Palermo Airport in Sicily and Sondrio Airport in South Tyrol, while Orbx Simulation Systems worked on the details of another 100. 94 points of interest in Italy and 11 in Malta have been added by Gaya Simulations to make the areas even more immersive.

Microsoft Flight Simulator frequently receives updates in the form of new aircraft, such as the next Superior gun DLC planes, as well as global updates that refine the locations players visit while traveling by air. Using advanced geospatial data gathered from real-world satellite data and other technologies, the game features one of the most realistic representations of planet Earth ever. However, flying planes in a simulator as detailed as Microsoft Flight Simulator is no simple task, so gamers have quite a steep learning curve to tackle before they can enjoy all the details without crashing spectacularly.

Since the game still has updates and DLC planned for the future, it will be interesting to find out which areas will be fleshed out next time. Waiting, Microsoft Flight Simulator modders are busy adding their own cool content pieces to the game to keep things interesting.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available now on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
