Vicky Phelan to receive honorary Freedom of Limerick


Cervical Cancer Campaign Vicky Phelan will receive the Freedom of Limerick City Honorary Award.

he Freedom of Limerick is the highest civic honor that can be bestowed on an individual by the City and County Council of Limerick.

The decision to bestow the honor on Vicky was taken at a special meeting of City Council and County Limerick after she was appointed by Mayor Daniel Butler.

She will be honored for her work in “exposing the Cervical Check scandal and her tireless support to other women who have been affected and who are fighting for justice.”

“Vicky is an inspiration. She has faced and continues to face her challenges head-on with a drive and determination that have earned her the respect and admiration of all, ”Mr. Butler said of Ms. Phelan.

“His work sums up the ideals of Limerick freedom. She has empowered women to speak their truth and ensure that their health is treated with the respect and attention it deserves.

Ms Phelan said she was “absolutely honored and delighted” to accept the Freedom of Limerick.

“I am a very proud breath of Kilkenny which has taken up residence in Limerick. I have always felt welcomed and accepted in Limerick, even before I became this public figure, so I would absolutely be delighted to accept the offer, ”she said.

She added that it was also an honor given that only four other women have been awarded the Freedom of Limerick since 1877.

Former Freedom of Limerick recipients include President Michael D. Higgins, US Presidents John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton, Pope John Paul II and rugby legend Paul O’Connell.

The ceremony will take place at the start of the year subject to Covid guidelines.
