Wiktor Chojecki: GoFundMe raises €8,000 for family of boy killed in Limerick crash


A community fundraiser has raised thousands of euros for the family of Wiktor Chojecki, 12, who died while driving a car that collided with a truck last week.

he young boy died after the car collided with a lorry in Rineroe, located just outside the village of Adare, around 2am last Friday. He was the sole occupant of the car.

Gardaí are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the boy driving his family’s Nissan Qashqai.

A funeral mass for Wiktor will be held tomorrow in his home town of Newcastle West.

A local fundraising effort to help with funeral costs has now grown to more than four times its original goal.

The GoFundMe page, set up by Newcastle West resident and Polish native Dominika Hogan, aimed to raise €2,000 for Wiktor’s family.

To date, €8,155 have been donated to the cause.

On the GoFundMe page, Ms Hogan said the aim of the fundraiser was to “make things a little easier for the family”.

She said: “As we all know by now, the tragic circumstances that happened over the weekend, a little man lost his life.

“We are trying to make things a little easier for the family by raising funds to cover funeral costs and additionally to help our friends through what is going to be a very difficult road to travel.

“Any donations will be truly appreciated. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Ms Hogan had previously organized a vigil for the young boy, which took place in Newcastle West on Sunday.

Balloons were held by the hundreds of people who attended the vigil, where the freshman was described as a “lovely little guy” who was “nice”.

“As a member of the Polish community in Newcastle West, it saddens me to say that a good friend of ours has lost his son in a car accident,” Ms Hogan wrote on social media.

“To show my support for Wiktor’s family and as a sign of respect, I would like to invite anyone who wishes to release a balloon in memory of Wiktor to the Square in Newcastle West at 3pm.”
