Young coastal professionals ‘step into their shoes’ at Back Bay Mission

Coast Young Professionals has partnered with Back Bay Mission in Biloxi to run a quarterly program to help the community better understand the homeless population and how they can help.

Participants started with a real-life scenario that happened in the center. The center offered them services to get a glimpse of what a day in the life might look like if they were “in those shoes”.

After lunch, provided by Back Bay Mission, participants toured the facilities. They were shown the showers, a pantry and an office space, depending on the need for assistance for their script.

Coast Young Professionals director Kelly Devine hopes this experience will make it more real and tangible by living it rather than just seeing homeless people on the streets. “I met a homeless veteran and he was grateful for a bowl of bran flakes. He had missed hot breakfast and was too early for hot lunch. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t. never been grateful for a bowl of bran flakes in my entire life.As a 17 year old who has everything she could ever need or want, this was a truly humbling experience.
