Representative Bennie Thompson: “No one is banned” in January 6 investigation

JACKSON, Mississippi – Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) has said no one is banned regarding potential subpoenas from the committee investigating the Jan.6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

During an appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation, Thompson said that if there is any evidence to suggest that former President Donald Trump played a role in the attack, the committee will consider subpoenaing the former president. .

“If the evidence points to former President Trump, or anyone else,” said Thompson, who is the committee chair. “The committee is not resonating in pushing back on this. We will move forward with this. “

But the approach of Rep. Thompson in the survey was not popular with Republicans. Only nine Republicans in the House of Representatives voted for former Trump adviser Steve Bannon to be in contempt of Congress.

Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) says Thompson’s actions weaken the authority of Congress as a partisan committee acts for the entire House.

“They weaken the power of Congress itself by issuing an invalid subpoena,” McCarthy said. “They use it to target their opponents.”

All three Mississippi Republican members of the House voted against Bannon’s detention for contempt of Congress.
