Windows 11 File Explorer crashes on right-click bug recognized

While Windows 10 was supposed to be the last version of Windows, Microsoft released Windows 11 in October last year. For those using a Windows 10 machine and supported hardware, upgrading to Windows 11 is completely free.

Microsoft’s latest features a revamped start menu, tweaked taskbar, and gaming features like DirectStorage carried over from Xbox Series X and S.

While the aforementioned changes might be good on paper, issues like Task Manager crashing on the Performance tab negatively impacted the user experience for some.

That said, Windows 11 users are now reporting (1,2,3,4,5) that file explorer (explorer.exe) crashes every time it right-clicks.

Many are frustrated because the problem prevents them from copying and renaming files or performing other operations.

Anyone having right click issues in Windows 11? I mostly have trouble with it on desktop, but also sometimes in store or on web pages. When I right click it freezes but not completely, it just shows that its thinking/working. You know, the pulsating circle. It may take up to a minute to display the menu it is supposed to display. I’ve tried updating the drivers for the mouse pad and my gaming mouse, and that doesn’t help. I have no idea what is wrong or how to fix it. It’s a 2018 gaming laptop and the brand is MSI if that helps.

Sometimes my windows explorer just crashes. And I’m on the latest stable version. I had to restart the whole process somehow with task manager, navigating via arrow keys to windows explorer process and end task, start new task d ‘Explorer. It doesn’t happen regularly, but when it does, it’s annoying.

Luckily, a software engineer from Microsoft recognized the problem on the Windows 11 subroutine and said they are working to fix it. But there is no ETA on when it will be fixed.

There is a bug in 22593 that sometimes crashes explorer when the context menu closes. Originally we thought this was limited to the rename action (this is what we wrote in the known issues in the flight notes), but we now believe that any action with the context menu could cause this. TLDR we are working on it

Also, there is a workaround that might help to get around Windows 11 File Explorer right click crashing issue.

Alternatively, users can try rolling back to a previous version of Windows 11 and see if that helps. We hope that Microsoft developers will soon find out the reason why Windows 11 File Explorer crashes on right click.

Rest assured that we will update this space once the issue is resolved, so stay tuned for more information.
